Bullying: Awareness with Dr. David Perrodin

Growing up ragging, teasing, bullying or whatever you want to call it was part of everyday life in the school hallways. Most adults have either seen bullying or have been bullied at some point in their lives. Inoculated by our parent’s comments to toughen up or blow it off. We have been indoctrinated to minimize the behavior, to remove its power by convincing ourselves that it’s boys being boys or girls being girls. We have this belief that we need to toughen up our kids, that they should be able to deal with the negative comments, because after all, sticks and stones, right? That’s what we were taught.

Something is different, I can feel it, I am sure you can feel it. Something is happening in the world that our children are growing up in, and it is a world that is unfamiliar to us. A world that is rapidly changing, and the parenting strategies we know so well, that we bank on by reflecting on our childhood, are now failing us. Not because we are not engaged with our children, or we don’t love them, but because we are trying to build skyscrapers with medieval tools. The tools given to us by our parents are slowing but surely becoming obsolete.

We are the first generation of parents, where our kids are more experienced in the world than we are, and by world, I mean digital world,  and they are left to fend for themselves.  As Parents, where do we turn to for advise? Even the professionals that are supposed to help us, at least the ones who have a firm grasp of what’s going on,  are few and far between. These professionals grew up in our world and they are struggling to understand and keep up with how it affects our kids, just like we are.
